SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a synthetic aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂) that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It binds cardiolipin, a phospholipid critical for cristae structure and electron transport chain organization.
